Beyond Coconut Oil- Let Us Introduce You to Our New Friend Coconut Fruit Extract
By Ni'Kita Wilson
Coconut oil will always have a special place in our hearts but this right here? It's giving my skin new life during these cold winter days!
When it comes to finding ways to care for hair and skin, the coconut is by far one of the most helpful fruits. We all know about the benefits of coconut oil for hair and skin, the pulp for mild exfoliation, and the shell for those of us who prefer exfoliation on the rougher side (hey now, this is a judge-free zone). Now the industry has further harnessed the beautifying power of the coconut to bring us Coconut Fruit Extract, an oily film former that kind of looks like runny petrolatum (aka Vaseline. FYI, petrolatum is the actual ingredient, Vaseline is the Trade name that has become synonymous with petrolatum).
In fact, Coconut Fruit Extract not only resembles petrolatum but also provides similar benefits to those we expect from rubbing down with petrolatum- soft, smooth and moisturized skin. The best part is that you don't look like a greased up bird afterwards! In the spirit of being honest, mineral oil and petrolatum do have the upper hand in performance but, if you want to reduce your usage of mineral oil and petrolatum then you have other options.
I think that I should also tell you (because I am just that open kind of person) that all Coconut Fruit Extract that you read on labels may not be the same.- they are not all created equal. Here are a few tips for you to make sure that you are getting the good stuff (by good, I'm only talking about the petrolatum-type skin moisturization benefits).
If you see Lactobacillus & Coconut Fruit Extract then it's probably not the right stuff.
If it is organic then it's probably not the right stuff.
If the product is water-based and crystal clear then it's probably not the right stuff
